Tango Fado Project

by Manhattan Camerata

with Daniel Binelli, Polly Ferman, Nathalie Pires, Lucia Caruso & Pedro H. da Silva

Exploring the connections between the sensuality of Argentine Tango and the passion of Portuguese Fado, Manhattan Camerata blends the traditional sounds of the two instruments that are at the very heart of both styles: bandoneón and Portuguese guitar. Although Tango and Fado originate in two distant countries, they are closely related in harmony, melody, and lyrical theme, but differ in rhythm and instrumentation. Lyrics often deal with heartbreak in the five stages of grief; Tango is often more expressive of anger and Fado representative of resignation. This album divides into four parts – Tango, Fado, a combination of the two, and beyond. Lucia Caruso and Pedro Henriques da Silva enjoy a musical union kindred to the Binelli-Ferman Duo. Daniel Binelli has said that the Portuguese guitar “is like a cathedral; the instrument shimmers and resonates in a way that feels like it has its own reverb chamber." The bandoneón, equally evocative, was originally used in Germany to replace the organ in small churches. These two instruments are most commonly associated with the passionate and romantic soul of Fado and Tango respectively. Both instruments are intensified by the bravura piano of Polly Ferman and Lucia Caruso; Fado singer Nathalie Pires delivers fiery vocals; and all are heightened by Manhattan Camerata’s world-class strings, clarinet, and percussion.
